Your Guide to Nursery Funding Options
At Smarties Nursery in Wirral, we offer a variety of funding options to help make quality childcare more affordable for families.
Whether you’re using funded hours, childcare vouchers, or the Tax-Free Childcare scheme, our team is here to support you every step of the way.
To get started, apply through the government website — once approved, you’ll receive a code we can use to arrange your funding.

15 or 30 Hours of Funding
We offer 15 and 30 hours of funded childcare each week for eligible 2–4 year olds, with a range of flexible sessions available.
- All 3- and 4-year-olds are entitled to 15 hours of free childcare per week (for 38 weeks a year), starting the term after their third birthday.
- Children aged 9 months to 4 years of eligible working families can receive up to 30 hours of free childcare a week (38 weeks a year) if both parents (or a single parent in a lone-parent household) meet income requirements.
- 2 year old children of a lower income family can receive 15 hours free childcare subject to eligibility.
- Apply for 30 hours of funding through the Childcare Choices website, and provide your code to the nursery once approved.
- Foster carers may also be eligible for 30 hours if it’s part of the child’s care plan and the carers meet work-related criteria.

Childcare Vouchers
We’re happy to accept most employer-issued childcare vouchers — a helpful way to reduce your nursery costs if your workplace offers them.
- The scheme closed to new applicants in October 2018, but parents who were already enrolled and remain eligible can continue using it.
- You get the vouchers through your employer if they still run the scheme.
- You can use them to pay for fees at nurseries, after-school clubs, childminders, and holiday schemes—as long as the provider is registered.
- There is a monthly cap (e.g. £243 per parent per month, depending on your tax rate), so any fees beyond this must be paid separately.

Tax-Free Childcare
Eligible for Tax-Free Childcare? You could save 20% on your childcare costs with this government-supported scheme.
- You can claim up to £2,000 per child per year (or £4,000 for a disabled child)
- Available for children under 12, or under 17 if disabled
Both parents (or the sole parent in a single-parent household) must:
- Be working and earning at least 16 hours at minimum wage
- Earn less than £100,000 per year each
- Not receiving Tax Credits, Universal Credit, or Childcare Vouchers
- Self-employed parents are eligible
- Newly self-employed parents get a start-up period with no minimum income requirement

Our Curriculum & Ofsted Commitment
At Smarties Nursery in Wirral, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, offering enriching experiences that nurture each child’s curiosity, confidence, and independence.
Our “home-from-home” approach ensures that every learning moment happens in a safe, familiar, and loving setting — from babies through to preschoolers.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a national framework that supports children’s learning and development from birth to age five.
It covers seven key areas, including communication, physical development, and emotional well-being — helping prepare children for school and beyond.
Instead of rigid plans, we respond to what sparks a child’s interest in the moment.
Whether it’s building a tower or spotting a bird in the garden, our team turns curiosity into real learning by following each child’s lead.
Each room at Smarties has age-appropriate learning goals, flexible routines, and skilled practitioners who adapt activities to suit your child’s stage and personality.
Development is tracked and shared with parents regularly.
- Yes, Smarties Nursery in Wirral is Ofsted registered, meaning we meet all requirements for safety, care, and education. You can view our registration and latest information on the Ofsted website.
Absolutely — we walk every family through each of our rooms so you can see how your child’s day will look at every stage.
You’ll meet the staff, hear about our learning aims, and ask any questions about routines or development.
Yes – Smarties Nursery in Wirral is fully inclusive and welcoming to children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). We believe every child deserves the chance to thrive in a caring, supportive environment that responds to their unique needs.
Our dedicated SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) works closely with families, practitioners, and external professionals to develop tailored support plans. These plans are designed to help children access all areas of learning, meet their developmental milestones, and feel confident in their abilities.
We use a graduated approach to support – starting with close observation and early identification, followed by targeted interventions and regular reviews to ensure each child is making progress. Staff are trained in inclusive practices and communication strategies to help children with a wide range of needs feel understood and secure.
Where needed, we adapt routines, resources, and activities to ensure every child is fully included in daily life at the nursery. Most importantly, we work in partnership with parents every step of the way, sharing observations, discussing strategies, and celebrating achievements.
Our nursery isn’t just suitable for children with SEND – it’s a place where they are valued, supported, and empowered to grow with confidence.
