Communication & Language
Preschoolers build rich language skills through stories, songs, role play, and daily conversation. Practitioners model new vocabulary and encourage expressive speaking, supporting listening and understanding in preparation for school.

Literacy & Maths Foundations
Children begin early phonics, mark-making, number recognition, and counting through playful, hands-on activities. We introduce shapes, patterns, and concepts of time and measurement to boost readiness for formal learning.

Physical Development
From obstacle courses and bikes outdoors to threading beads and pencil control indoors — we support both gross and fine motor development essential for writing and self-care independence.

Personal, Social & Emotional Development
Preschoolers learn to take turns, manage emotions, build friendships, and show empathy. We guide them in resolving conflict and becoming resilient, confident learners through consistent routines and nurturing care.

Understanding the World
Exploration of nature, community roles, seasons, and simple science experiments sparks curiosity about the world around them. Children learn through discovery, conversation, and hands-on learning opportunities.

Our Key Person System
In the lead-up to starting school, children benefit from emotional security and individual attention. Each child in our Preschool Room at Smarties Nursery in Wirral is supported by a key person who helps them feel confident, understood, and excited about learning.
How it works:
- Supportive Bonds: Your child’s key person builds a warm, trusting relationship to support their independence, social skills, and emotional wellbeing.
- Learning Tailored to the Child: We observe and track progress in key areas of development—adapting learning opportunities to meet each child’s strengths, interests, and goals.
- Ongoing Dialogue with Families: We share updates during handovers and hold regular parent meetings to discuss learning, progress, and any support needs.
- Helping Children Transition to School: Key persons guide children through routines, friendships, and confidence-building activities that help them feel ready for their next step.
Why it matters
The key person system is at the heart of our home-from-home ethos. It strengthens bonds, creates consistency, and ensures that every child receives the right balance of emotional support, learning opportunities, and loving care.

- Food hygiene and allergy awareness
- Safe sleep guidance and behaviour support
- SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) awareness and inclusion
We’re committed to up-to-date training and reflective practice — ensuring your child receives the very best care, education, and support.
We know starting school is a major milestone, and we take great care to ensure each child feels prepared, confident, and excited for the next step.

- Social development (turn-taking, teamwork, communication)
- Emotional support (discussing change, confidence building)
We also communicate with local primary schools and, where possible, support transition visits or information sharing — all tailored to each child’s needs.
